Bloomberg, founded in 1982, is the industry standard for trading data with 315,000 subscribers (2013). Bloomberg provides real-time market data such as price data on exchange traded stocks, warrants, options, futures, indices, bonds, commodities and currencies as well streaming news and comprehensive economic indicators and financial data. Bloomberg only offers one level of subscription (at a hefty $24,000 a year) with access to all data. But it does charge a lower price—currently about $20,000 a year—for customers with two or more subscriptions. Bloomberg’s revenue was $7.9 billion (2012), most of it from terminals. Its major competitor is Thompson Reuters with its Reuters 3000 Xtra (1999) product. Other main competitors include Advantage Data Inc., Capital IQ, Dow Jones., FactSet Research Systems, Fidessa, Morningstar Direct, Markit, PrivateRaise.com, SIX Financial Information, Zacks Investment Research. Whereas Bloomberg used to be the only game in town, the next decade will likely be one of a complete shake-up (and immense growth) of the financial data & analytics provision market place. More players will come in and more users and use cases will diversify and extend available offerings. The result is likely to be a greater variety of offerings at many price points.
